JEEZUS! Is
Bold, Queer, and
Unapologetically
Theatrical, and It’s
Landing in London
There’s something very satisfying about a show that
knows exactly what it is, and commits to it fully.
JEEZUS! does exactly that.
After a sold-out, award-winning run at Edinburgh Fringe, this high-energy comedy
musical is heading to the New Diorama Theatre for a limited London run, and it’s
bringing big ideas, bigger feelings, and a whole lot of personality with it.
Set in 1990s Peru, the story follows Jesús, a young altar boy preparing for
his first communion, while navigating desire, faith, and the weight of expectation
in a world shaped by religion and control. It’s personal, political, and deeply
queer, all at once.
At the centre of it all are creators and performers Sergio Antonio Maggiolo
and Guido Garcia Lueches, who bring the story to life between them, shifting
through characters, moods and moments with impressive ease. It feels intimate,
but never small.
What makes JEEZUS! hit is how it balances tone. It’s playful, emotional,
and sharp, often within the same breath. The show doesn’t shy away from big
themes like sexuality, belief, and identity, but it approaches them with warmth,
humour, and a real sense of joy.
And the music carries it all beautifully. Expect a mix of Latin pop, salsa, and
South American sounds, all performed live on stage, giving the whole thing a
pulse that keeps it moving from start to finish.
At its heart, this is a story about growing up, figuring yourself out, and
navigating the stories you’ve been handed about who you’re supposed to
be. If you’ve ever wrestled with identity, expectation, or belonging, there’s
something here that will land.
It’s also just a genuinely good night out. The kind of show you sit back into,
get swept up in, and come out of feeling like you’ve seen something that actually
had something to say.
