DJ of the Month
Gordon John
If there’s somewhere this seasoned tune-selector hasn’t
played before, we don’t wanna hear about it — the Bear
Bash resident shares some pearls of wisdom
Tell us a bit about your DJ journey so far
I started DJing in London in 1998 on a 79CXR and was shown the ropes by
Tony Jr. I started playing in Comptons, Edge, Substation Soho, Eagle, and
Barcode — I had my own room at Heaven on Mondays for 14 years. I’ve been
up north in Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, as well as lots of gigs for Recon
abroad in the USA, Germany and Australia. Now, you’ll find me at Bear Bash,
The King’s Arms and Beefmince.
What’s a song that sums up Bear Bash?
It has to be the Purple Disco Machine remix of Groovejet by Spiller and
Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
Give us a record you’ve fallen in love with from the past year
Paradise Drive - Into Your Heart. It samples Mantronix Got To Have Your
Love and it’’s a banger. Very 00s funkie house and DTPM feel.
And what’s an oldie that never fails to please?
Put Em High by Stonebridge and Therese always gets a crowd warmed up,
while I like to drop Runnin’ by Basstoy at the peak of my set.
Which artist do you turn to when a dance floor needs bringing to life?
Sharp Boys. Nobody will ever match their talent. Hip Hoperation is still a
MONSTER. And their remix of Monie Love is filth.
When can we catch you DJing in the upcoming weeks?
I’m in Montreal for a bit, but after that, I’m one of the regular DJs with Terry T-Rex
at Bear Bash Party in Eagle London, which is the second Friday of each month. I
also DJ at the Kings Arms once a month and occasionally at Beefmince.
