To Hell
& Bach
The Masterworkers are
bringing uber-talented
classical musicians to a
cosy venue near you
For all its magic and capacity to wow, classical music has something of an image problem — don’t tell
us you don’t also picture overly formal concert halls full of shushing crowds in equally stiff tailoring.
Masterworkers is on a mission to bring classical music to the masses and instil it with a sense
of fun. That means putting on shows in places where you wouldn’t typically see such concerts,
letting people enjoy a drink or two, and certainly not enforcing a dress code.
This month, there will be two Masterworkers events. The first is on
Sunday 19th down in the wonderful Phoenix Arts Club (WC2H 8BU),
where you’ll be treated to Elgar’s Piano Quintet
interspersed with popular and crossover pieces
spanning Mozart to Bluegrass.
The second is the brilliantly-titled ‘To
Hell and Bach’, a Halloween special that will
feature Tartini’s virtuosic ‘Devil’s Trill’ Sonata, the
dancing skeletons of Saint-Saëns ‘Danse Macabre’, and, the duelling violas of Bach’s last
Brandenburg Concerto. This will take place on Wednesday 29th at Chats Palace (E9 6DF).
Both events involve musicians from London’s finest orchestras, including the
English National Opera, the BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestras, and the London
Philharmonic Orchestra. Whether you’re a Radio 3 regular or someone who doesn’t
know their Schubert from their Schumann, all are welcome to enjoy the immense talent
of these performers and take in the majesty of classical music in more casual environs.
